Why Green Light is used in Operating Rooms
Green Light has been studied for over a century and is being specified for an increasing number of surgical suites due to the growth of Videoscopic Surgery.
Continuing the studies of his predecessors, Dr. Harry Sherman is credited with introducing materials such as green linen into ORs in 1914. He found that the color green around a surgeon reduced glare from the white lighting and complemented the color of blood, to allow for greater visibility during procedures. The discovery that details and texture of the surgical cavity could be easily viewed without the eye competing with the ambient light, has since influenced other surgeons to follow this direction.1,2
Procedural issues with White Light only ORs:
- Eye fatigue.
- Monitor colors are more difficult to see.
- Glare off reflective surfaces.
- Ambient fixtures may get dimmed to eliminate fatigue while pendant lights are used by surgeons. This common compromise does not provide the appropriate task lighting for the support staff.
Why Green Light works:
The reflection of Green Light off monitor screens can improve depth and contrast of the images being viewed by surgical staff. Because Green Light does not reduce the image resolution being displayed on the OR monitors, the lighting can remain on and bright enough for the support staff to move safely throughout the room.
Having Control over OR Lighting
SLD fixtures are wired on isolated circuitry enabling any electrical installer to outfit the controls for the operating room as preferred. Users can select which lights they want powered at once, and all lighting controls are specified to allow for full dimming.
SLD can provide Green Light
SLD Green Light Lens
Construction of the Green Light in any SLD fixture includes white LED filtered through a diffused green colored plastic lens. This green lens is interchangeable with the SLD supplied clear diffused lens. The finished look provides a seamless transition during ceiling surface finishing.
Where Green Light is Applied in an Operating Room
Studies show the most useful application of Green Light in ORs is between the lighting above the operating table & the task lighting throughout the main ceiling surface. Typical configurations with SLD fixtures have the Green Light surrounding the perimeter, or as supplemental strip lighting around the system at the center of the room.
Integrate Green Light with SLD products
AirFRAME Light Grid
Utilizing the perimeter circuit of lighting on an AirFRAME is a common configuration for adding Green Light to an OR with SLD. The finished look appears seamless and fully integrated into the room lighting.
The AirFRAME light grid can be customized to include the green lens wherever desired. It can be on many lights, or alternatively restricted to fewer selected light bars. It is not recommended to have Green Light throughout an entire AirFRAME system, as then the room would require additional white lights to meet standard light levels.
